Brass
for Africa 2 – A Musical Spectacular
Back by popular demand, Brass for Africa 2 –
A Musical Spectacular (sponsored by Geneva
Instruments and Reliance Bank), is the
follow-up event to the critically acclaimed
original concert in late 2009. The event
again features the amazing Brass Band Aid
Celebrity Band (conducted by Dr Stephen Cobb),
an all-star band comprising many of the
finest brass and percussion players from
across the UK and Europe, from bands such as
Black Dyke, Cory, Foden’s as well as top
orchestras. This will be the fifth time the
band has come together.
Also starring will be a galaxy of
internationally renowned soloists: Chris
Thomas (trombone), David Thornton (euphonium),
Glyn Williams (euphonium), Helen Williams (flugel
horn), Katrina Marzella (baritone), Owen
Farr (tenor horn) and Steve Sykes (tuba) as
well as vocal soloist, former BBC Young
Choirgirl of the Year, Lucy Rhodes. It
promises to be a real musical feast, with
something for everyone and more than a few
surprises!
The event will be held at The Salvation Army
in Kettering, and the day will kick off with
a brass masterclass from David Thornton,
former Principal Euphonium of the Black Dyke
Band. This is open to players of all
instruments, ages and abilities. David will
also be presenting a short recital at the
end. Volunteer soloists are welcome for the
masterclass, if you would like to contribute
a solo please contact Andrew Wainwright at
wainwright_andrew@hotmail.com
The evening concert will commence at 7.30pm.
All proceeds from the event are going to
Chikankata Hospital and John Laing Clinic
and Community School, Zambia. The hospital
serves some 85,000 people in the locality,
whilst the clinic and community school is
one of just a handful of similar services on
offer in a township of over a million people.
They are in dyer need of financial support
and so this event will go a long way to
helping to keep these vital services going.
